| On the weekend of 12-14
June 2005, the Couzinz team enthusiastically attended
the Magic Millions Weanling Sale at the Gold Coast with
instructions to purchase five weanlings on behalf of
Bill Duncan Bloodstock Pty Ltd. Not surprisingly, the
research that went into the final selection of potential
purchases would have challenged the preparation and
planning of some of the major thoroughbred buyers at
any sale throughout Australia. And it has already paid
off in a short period of time.
One of the weanlings selected for purchase was a tough
looking colt with good confirmation offered by Emirates
Park. He was by Dexter (GB) from the Entrepreneur
unraced mare Amulet and was knocked down for
$13,000.
hile this colt met all the criteria for the Couzinz
blueprint for selection, the added attraction was that
his dam Amulet was a half-sister to the underrated
Sir Dex (Dexter- Amwaj). His dam, Amwaj
by Marscay from Our Illusion, is a half-sister
to the winner of the AJC Metropolitan (Gr 1), Moonee
Valley Cup (Gr 2) and Gold Coast Prime Minister's Cup
(Gr 2) in Donegal Mist.
Sir Dex, as a two and three year old, was a
highly underrated galloper with only 4 wins to his credit
including the VRC Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3). However,
he had run placings in six group races including the
QTC Sire's Produce (Gr 1), AJC Williams Inglis Heroic
2 YO Championship (Gr 2), AJC Villiers (Gr 2), and MVRC
Waterford Crystal Mile (Gr 2).
So, it is with great satisfaction and optimism that
we congratulate trainer Greg Hickman and the connections
of Sir Dex in winning the star studded Warwick
Stakes 1400 (Gr 2) on Saturday at Randwick at $41.
Jockey Zac Purton had his biggest success since moving
to Sydney and drove the horse through a tight gap over
the concluding stages to get up in the final bound by
a head and beat the John Hawkes trained Dizelle
(AJC Oakes Gr 1 winner) with stablemate Sportsman
finishing third. Left in the wake of Sir Dex
was the juvenile champion Dance Hero, Caulfield
Guineas winner Econsul and top class galloper
Court's In Session.
Sir Dex is on a Caulfield Cup and Melbourne
Cup mission and must now be considered a serious contender.
Greg Hickman said after the race, "He's a very good
horse and they can't doubt him anymore."
His three quarter brother will be entered for the Magic
Millions Yearling Sale in January 2005. Click
