Go Sir Dex for the Cups- 21 August 2005

On the weekend of 12-14 June 2005, the Couzinz team enthusiastically attended the Magic Millions Weanling Sale at the Gold Coast with instructions to purchase five weanlings on behalf of Bill Duncan Bloodstock Pty Ltd. Not surprisingly, the research that went into the final selection of potential purchases would have challenged the preparation and planning of some of the major thoroughbred buyers at any sale throughout Australia. And it has already paid off in a short period of time.

One of the weanlings selected for purchase was a tough looking colt with good confirmation offered by Emirates Park. He was by Dexter (GB) from the Entrepreneur unraced mare Amulet and was knocked down for $13,000.

hile this colt met all the criteria for the Couzinz blueprint for selection, the added attraction was that his dam Amulet was a half-sister to the underrated Sir Dex (Dexter- Amwaj). His dam, Amwaj by Marscay from Our Illusion, is a half-sister to the winner of the AJC Metropolitan (Gr 1), Moonee Valley Cup (Gr 2) and Gold Coast Prime Minister's Cup (Gr 2) in Donegal Mist.

Sir Dex, as a two and three year old, was a highly underrated galloper with only 4 wins to his credit including the VRC Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3). However, he had run placings in six group races including the QTC Sire's Produce (Gr 1), AJC Williams Inglis Heroic 2 YO Championship (Gr 2), AJC Villiers (Gr 2), and MVRC Waterford Crystal Mile (Gr 2).

So, it is with great satisfaction and optimism that we congratulate trainer Greg Hickman and the connections of Sir Dex in winning the star studded Warwick Stakes 1400 (Gr 2) on Saturday at Randwick at $41. Jockey Zac Purton had his biggest success since moving to Sydney and drove the horse through a tight gap over the concluding stages to get up in the final bound by a head and beat the John Hawkes trained Dizelle (AJC Oakes Gr 1 winner) with stablemate Sportsman finishing third. Left in the wake of Sir Dex was the juvenile champion Dance Hero, Caulfield Guineas winner Econsul and top class galloper Court's In Session.

Sir Dex is on a Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup mission and must now be considered a serious contender. Greg Hickman said after the race, "He's a very good horse and they can't doubt him anymore."

His three quarter brother will be entered for the Magic Millions Yearling Sale in January 2005. Click here for details of his pedigree.

Bill Duncan appointed to TBQA Committee-18 August 2005

On 16th August, the Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association (TBQA) held its annual general meeting in Brisbane and appointed Bill Duncan to its Management Committee.

Bill's experience at a corporate level as a founding director of RMG Limited and having previously owned and operated the largest receivables management business in Australia should see him make a major contribution to the objectives and strategies of this organisation. As a past Australian President of the Australian Institute of Credit Management, he has gained the knowledge needed to vigorously participate in association administration and management for the benefit of members.

With this background added to an ongoing passion for involvement in the thoroughbred breeding industry in Queensland, Bill is looking forward to this latest challenge.

First Foal for the Season- 8 August 2005

The third crop of Honours List (IRE) foals have been eagerly awaited by many interested breeders and, if the first foal born at Couzinz is any indication, we are in for a bumper season for the most precocious son of Danehill.

On 6th August, Cherete (Centro- Real Charmer) produced a strapping bay filly pictured opposite at day 2 and weighing in at 60kg.

Cherete, herself a winning racemare, has been a grand producer for Bill Duncan and is the dam of four named foals, all winners. Her unraced progeny is a 2 year old by Thunder Gulch in training with David Kelly at Wadham Park in Queensland. He is a full brother to the Gai Waterhouse trained Pink 'n' Black, the winner of three metropolitan races in Sydney.

Couzinz has another six mares in foal to Honours List and Ian Crompton, Studmaster, says "If they all look like Chetere's filly, we will have a great bunch of yearlings for the sales". For further details, click here to review the Broodmares on the Breeding page.

Cherete returns to Widden Stud at the end of the month to be mated with Honours List a second time.
