| After
a promising start to her latest preparation, Silken
Sheets, the well bred mare owned by
Bill Duncan Bloodstock Pty Ltd, has been retired
on the advice of trainer, Pat Duff.
She will be mated this
season with Ferocity through a breeding
venture with Iskander Racing and Breeding.
Silken Sheets had
10 starts for 4 wins and 1 second placing. She won at
only her second start at the Gold Coast over 1300m by
2 lengths, coming from the outside barrier and sitting
wide throughout the race. After winning again at her
fifth start, again from an outside barrier, she was
sent to Melbourne and performed credibly in top company.
She then returned to Couzinz for a
three month spell.
Returning to the track
in August 2006, Silken Sheets had two
runs for two wins and then finished an uncharacteristic
last at Doomben on 16 September 2006. She was found
to have severe problems with both front feet and became
consistently sore in front. Her trainer, Pat
Duff, advised that, although
she had unlimited potential as a race mare, her problems
would persist and worsen as she got older. Bill
Duncan agreed that she was too valuable as
a broodmare and should be retired.
Silken Sheets
is by Grand Lodge (USA) from the Stakes
Placed mare Requests who is by Procol
Harum from Play My Tune. Her

She was stakes placed with a 2nd in the SAJC Cinderella
Stakes [L] and 3rd in the SAJC National
Stakes [G3]. She is the dam of 6 foals,
3 raced, all winners.
Her sire, Grand
Lodge (USA), is from the famous Danzig
family and sire of the legendary Shogun
Lodge and Spring Championship Stakes [G1]
winner Hotel Grand.
Silken Sheets is
a half sister to Dorky also by Grand
Lodge and winner of $215,800 and stakes placed
in no less than 6 group races and 3 listed races including
a 4th in the Ascot Vale Stakes [G2].

So, how did Silken
Sheets get her name? Well, it’s quite
simple really.
Her sire is Grand
Lodge and dam sire is Procol Harum.
Grand Lodge is the sire of Hotel
Grand.
The British band, Procol
Harum, produced an album in the 1970’s called
Grand Hotel and the first verse of the signature song
was:
“Tonight we sleep on silken sheets
We drink fine wine and eat rare meats
On Carousel and gambling stake
Our fortunes speed, and dissipate.
It's candlelight and chandelier,
It's silver plate and crystal clear.
The nights we stay at Hotel Grand”
Not quite the same conditions that our mare Silken
Sheets will encounter when she meets up with
Ferocity at Oaklands Stud in
the next few days but who knows?
